UAE VoIP ban gets teeth, sparks debate

You’ll recall that the United Arab Emirates does not love VoIP. More accurately, the legacy telco and regulators there don’t love VoIP. Businesses seem to like it fine, and were using it relatively unmolested until recently. Then VoIP connections started to go dead, shut down in order to comply with regulations-regulations that protect the revenue stream of the legacy carriers. A tech portal asked its users if they thought that the VoIP ban was bad for their business. Perhaps unsurprisingly, 77 percent said, yes, very much. Only about 10 percent of those polled said the VoIP ban wasn’t hurting their business expansion.
